Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple

One of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and one of the Char Dham, the Ramanathaswamy Temple is the spiritual heart of Rameswaram. Its towering gopurams, the world's longest temple corridor and 22 sacred theerthams draw devotees from across India.

The 22 Theerthams

The 22 Theerthams

Inside the temple, 22 holy wells (theerthams) are believed to wash away sins and bestow blessings. Pilgrims traditionally bathe at each one, guided by temple priests.

  • Allow 2 to 3 hours for the full ritual
Agni Theertham

Agni Theertham

The sea-shore opposite the temple's eastern entrance, Agni Theertham is the first of the holy bathing spots. Devotees take a dip here before entering the temple — sunrise is especially auspicious.

Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi

At the southeastern tip of the island lies Dhanushkodi — the legendary point where Lord Rama is said to have built the bridge to Lanka. Today, it's a hauntingly beautiful ghost town with ruins, golden beaches and turquoise seas.
